In 2017, 41% of the energy produced in Spain had origin in any renewable source, which shows that the country has one of the largest developments in renewable energies in the world, with a lot of companies in the sector developing projects not only locally but in many other countries.
In Spain there are no deposits of hydrocarbons, which enforces the need for renewable not to depend on foreign suppliers in the energy mix. Most notable figures of the sector are:
Spain ranks second of the world in generation of wind energy, and fourth in the ranking of installed power, that in 2016 exceeded the 23,000 MW.
It occupies the 5th position in solar power installed in Europe and eighth in the world, which approached to 5,000 MW in 2016.
Spain ranks the first in installed solar thermal power with almost 2,500 MW. (both Tower, as cylinder – parabolic, Fresnel and discs). More than 70% of the global projects are developed by Spanish companies.
Spain occupies the sixth place in biomass production.
It is the third country of the EU in electricity production. (Almost 19.000 MW).
The country also has the main control center of the renewables in the world, CECRE, that in real time receives information from around the world in state of the connection, production and tension at the point of connection, by monitoring any incident that may occur.
Spain is also the second world renewable energy-related patents per capita ranking, only behind Germany and ahead of US, occupies the fifth place in absolute terms and the seventh as a percentage of related investments.
The company, which ranks the first in the world in producing energy with renewable sources is the Spanish Iberdrola, which gives the measure and the importance of the sector in Spain. Also the biggest producer of photovoltaic is Spanish, same as the main companies of thermoelectric generation. The country also boasts some of the most important component manufacturers of the world, among them the fourth largest producer of wind turbines.
In April 2017 the Ministry of Energy published an auction that tool place to award of 3,000 MW from renewable sources to be connected to the network with the deadline in December 31, 2019. The main milestones in the award:
Identification of the installation (publication of winners + 6 months)
Approval of the project (publication + 6 months)
Network connection (31 december 2019)
